Building Ecosystems in Biology
The Year 12 Biology students have started a hands-on project building mesocosms.
So, what is a mesocosm? This self-sustaining ecosystem functions as a nutrient and water recycling garden.
In theory, these little gardens can live for years without any water being added as the garden’s ecosystem generates everything it could need to survive.
The students had a lot of fun layering the base components and choosing plants to add. It was very important for the students to make sure all these elements created effective drainage and biological material for the plants to grow in.
The mesocosms will continue to be monitored by the Biology students to track any environmental changes within the mini-ecosystems.
