Our School Musicals are the Talk of the Town! After thoroughly enjoying the evening performances recently of The Addams Family and discussing the brilliant entertainment with many people it is clear that we have created a great cultural piece for Haileybury Rendall School and the wider Darwin Community.
After thoroughly enjoying the evening performances recently of The Addams Family and discussing the brilliant entertainment with many people, it is clear that we have created a great cultural piece for Haileybury Rendall School and the wider Darwin Community.
On Saturday night, I was joined in the audience by His Honour, Hugh Heggie, the Chief Administrator of the NT, and his wife, Ruth. They met the lead members of the cast before the show and were then captivated by the entire event. His Honour fervently shouted “Bravo!” at the end of every act and at one point turned to me and said, “This is so professional – I cannot believe they are school kids!”
When I arrived at HRS one of our ideas was to create a fun performance that involved lots of students, plenty of singing and dancing, engaging music, and strong staff guidance. The first musical I saw was Annie, and it was very well done and most enjoyable, but total student involvement was less than 20. Once we opened up the musicals to Years 5 – 12, we have seen Beauty and the Beast, High School Musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Addams Family. We now have almost 100 students involved across acting, singing, dancing, music, choreography, backstage, props, sound, and lighting.
We even have recent alumni returning to help with the show.
Yes, it has all been great fun, but I am not sure anyone realised just how GOOD these productions would be. So much talent on display, emerging talent and first-time performers wowing us.
Such commitment and dedication from staff and students to put on a brilliant show.
Thank you to all involved, all who watched, and all who keep spreading the word about our amazing School community!

Father's Day
The ELC was delighted to host a special Father’s Day afternoon tea, bringing together children and their dads, grandads, uncles, and other special father figures and families for an afternoon filled with joy, connection, and togetherness.
The Preschool yard came alive with the wonderful buzz of conversation as families gathered around decorated tables to share a delicious spread. Fresh fruit, pastries, juices, and a wonderful welcoming atmosphere all made for a wonderful evening.
Children beamed with pride as they performed their two-song concert before guided their guests through their learning spaces and inviting them to play. It was heartwarming to see fathers sitting at craft tables, construction zones, joining in games, and even enjoying a book or two in the reading corner. These moments of shared learning highlighted the important role that father figures play in children’s lives and how treasured these connections are.
A highlight of the afternoon was our Father’s Day activity stations, where children and dads worked side by side on fun challenges. From mini obstacle courses and construction play to making keepsake crafts, there was plenty of laughter and teamwork to be found. Families also enjoyed our photo booth, capturing snapshots of smiles and memories to hold onto for years to come.
The celebration created a wonderful atmosphere of community, with fathers connecting not only with their own children but also with one another. Many families expressed how meaningful it was to pause, spend quality time together, and feel part of the ELC community. Our heartfelt thanks go to all the families who joined us, helping to make this Father’s Day celebration so special. It was a beautiful reminder of the strong bonds we share and the joy that comes from celebrating together.

Junior School news
Thank you for a wonderful term, everyone!
It has certainly been a busy one, and it has been fantastic to see so many students and families engaged in Junior School life.
This term, we were proud to have two teams represent HRS in the Tournament of Minds competition. Both teams received Honours—a remarkable achievement that reflects their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.
In addition, several students represented our school in the National Spelling Bee, performing remarkably well. These successes highlight not only the dedication of our students and staff but also the strength of the Explicit Instruction teaching model that we value so highly at HRS.
We also enjoyed a number of special events across the term. NAIDOC Week provided rich opportunities for students to learn about and celebrate Indigenous culture. Book Week was another highlight, with students dressing up in fantastic costumes and enjoying the Book Parade. House activities have continued to strengthen friendships and school spirit, with students always striving to do their personal best.
A special highlight was the school musical, The Addams Family, which showcased many of our Year 5 and 6 students shining on stage. It was a joy to watch their talent, confidence, and commitment come to life in such a fantastic production.
I hope the upcoming holiday break provides an opportunity to relax, recharge, and enjoy the last of this beautiful weather.
Thank you again for your support. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 4.

Digital Thumbprint Workshops
In Week 8, Middle School students took part in the Digital Thumbprint workshops, an engaging and interactive program designed to help them thrive in the online world.
Year 7 students explored what it means to build respectful relationships online. Through thought-provoking scenarios, they considered the impact of their words and actions, and discussed important topics such as consent, image-based abuse, and the influence of Artificial Intelligence. Many students reflected on how they can use their voices and choices to create safer spaces for themselves and their peers.
Year 8 students learned practical ways to stay safe from hackers, scammers, and impersonators who target young people through gaming and social media. By practising digital defence strategies, they discovered how small, smart moves can make a big difference.
In Year 9, students had the opportunity to experiment with GenAI applications, gaining new ideas for creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. At the same time, they developed strategies to protect themselves from the risks of misuse.
The workshops provided timely, practical insights to empower our students to make wise choices in their digital lives.
Student Leadership 2026
The Middle School student leadership process for 2026 is underway. Year 8 students have been nominated, and voting will take place at the beginning of Term 4. Students will be shortlisted, and interviews will occur in early Term 4. Thank you to all students who showed courage by self-nominating.
We look forward to seeing the impact of our student leaders and the amplification of all student voices in 2026.

Ochre Integrated Studies Excursion
On Friday, 5 September, our Ochre students had an exciting and educational session at Crocosaurus Cove. The visit was designed to deepen their understanding of water usage in our environments and to reinforce the knowledge they gained during their recent Integrated Studies unit. The students were absolutely engaged throughout the excursion, soaking up information and enjoying the hands-on experience. One of the highlights was the opportunity to hold some of the amazing animals, including baby crocodiles and snakes, which brought their learning to life in a memorable way. This visit not only enriched their understanding of environmental water use but also sparked curiosity and respect for these incredible creatures and their habitats. It was a fantastic day of learning and fun for all involved!
As we come to the end of a long and busy term, I would like to acknowledge the many achievements of our Senior School students.
Our Unit 3/4 students recently completed their trial examinations in preparation for the final VCAA exams in Term 4. These exams are an important step in refining study strategies, identifying areas for improvement, and building confidence ahead of the final assessments. We commend our Year 12 students for the commitment and focus they continue to show.
On the sporting field, our Senior Boys Football team had a remarkable season, going undefeated all year and making it through to the Grand Final. Although the result did not go their way on the day, the team played with great spirit and determination. A special congratulations goes to Sonny (Year 11), who was awarded Best on Ground for the final.
The Senior School Musical, The Addams Family, came to life on stage after months of hard work and rehearsals. The performances were all truly outstanding, showcasing the talent, creativity, and teamwork of both the cast and crew. Congratulations to all students and staff involved for bringing such a professional and entertaining production to our community.
This week also saw the rescheduled World’s Greatest Shave event, led by Social Justice Prefect, Oliver (Year 12). The lunchtime fundraiser featured novelty events, hair shaving, colouring, and a sausage sizzle, raising valuable funds for the Leukemia Foundation.
I wish all families a safe and restful holiday. Best of luck to our Year 12 students as they continue preparing for their final exams in Term 4.
