Reconciliation week should be every week at HRS.
Now, more than ever!
I spoke at Middle School Assembly this week and I urged our students to understand and immerse themselves in the amazing National Reconciliation Week that we have planned from Monday, 27 May up to and including Monday, 3 June and NOT just let it happen around them.
At HRS, our non-Indigenous staff and students rightly choose to organise and run the special week. It is largely our responsibility to move this country towards a truly reconciled state. A place we all love and are proud of - and where we live happily and respectfully with all Australians.
I really believe that our children’s generation will come together to produce the best version of a harmonious community into the future.
I urge our students to:
At HRS our students can:
And I think I have mentioned this before, but now more than ever when it comes to reconciliation:

The Early Learning Centre (ELC) came alive during our delightful Mother's Day Breakfast. Our children stole the show with their heartfelt performances to honour their mothers and special family members. Laughter and joy filled the air as families came together to celebrate.
Following the performance, families enjoyed a delicious breakfast before exploring engaging activity stations. The photo booth was abuzz with excitement as families captured joyful moments with fun props and backdrops and creativity flourished at the edible necklace station where children and parents worked together to create colourful and tasty jewellery from an assortment of cereals. at the edible necklace station.
For those seeking relaxation, the pamper booth offered hand massages, nail painting and glamorous hair styling. The biscuit decorating station allowed families to unleash their creativity, with children eagerly decorating biscuits with icing and sprinkles.
There was also a cozy reading corner for families to snuggle up and share a story together amidst the bustling activities.
It was wonderful to see so many of our beautiful families socialising together and sharing this special morning.
The ELC Mother's Day Breakfast was a heartwarming celebration of love and connection. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this event unforgettable. We look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate and cherish our vibrant ELC family.

The last few weeks have flown by, with a continuous flurry of excitement throughout the Junior School. We continue to have House activities on Fridays, and students are looking forward to the athletic sports carnival Friday, 31 May.
Last week we celebrated Do it for Dolly Day., a day where we reflect on what it means to be a good friend and to speak out against bullying. Students took part in classroom activities, and we acknowledged the day by wearing a splash of blue. Year 12 student, Bonnie Peacocke, performed a song with some of our choir members during Assembly.
The Year 6 camps took place over the last two weeks; I always enjoy watching the students leave school on Wednesday with such excitement and anticipation and see them come home on Friday with big smiles on their faces and many wonderful stories to share with friends and family.
A very big thank you to Mr. Gerisimon, Ms. Barry, Year 6 teachers and Ms. Manning for their organisation, care, and involvement in these camps. It is a remarkable experience and enjoyed by all.
A huge congratulations to Sophie Proctor who has been selected to represent the Northern Territory in WAG level 7 gymnastics at QLD's Border Challenge at the end of June. We wish her all the very best, we are very proud of her and will be cheering her on.

Middle School students have now completed their Semester 1 examinations. It was a busy time for staff, students and, I’m sure, families, but it now means students can look to focus on their new areas of study. While the examination process can be daunting, the purpose is to give our students an opportunity to practice the skills required to succeed in VCE exams in Year 11 and 12. The skills we see as most important are:
Students have had a chance to unpack their exams in class. They are encouraged to act on the feedback and learn to modify their approaches for next time.
While we know it takes time for our Middle School students to hone and develop these skills, by the end of Year 9 we see them move into Senior School with a much clearer understanding of what it takes to get the best out of themselves and how to leverage the support of teachers.
Whether students sit their first exam in Year 7 or Year 12, they need skills and strategies to cope with the demands placed upon them. We prefer students don’t have their first exposure at Year 12.
Congratulations to all of our students for approaching Exam Week with diligence, commitment, and a willingness to grow.

Welcome to Semester 2. It has been a busy start as our students transitioned into new content and electives and began VCE and VCEVM Units 2 and Unit 4.
As part of VCE Unit 3-4, students are required to complete VCAA exams in October and November. Completing an assessment under timed conditions can be challenging, therefore having the opportunity to practice the required skills, and having the right mindset is crucial for success. Exam week was a chance for students from Year 7 to Year 11 to have the chance to experience and learn from the process. As teachers review the exams in class it is important for students to focus on the advice and feedback, not the score. This is an opportunity to learn and grow from the experience.
As always there are a multitude of activities for students to participate in. On Friday, 10 May VCE Drama students presented ‘Welcome to...GRWM’, their Unit 3 Ensemble Performance SAC, written and performed by senior Drama students. The performance was a visual experience of thought-provoking scenes. Congratulations to Enrico Santos (Year 12), Trinity Coleman (Year 12), Lakshya Canda (Year 12), Chelsea Howland (Year 12), Isabelle Edwards (Year 11), Breanna McCoy (Year 11) and Marc Genebraldo (Year 12) for this achievement
The Early Bird reading sessions (run by Year 12 students each Friday morning), are beginning to gain attention from the Junior school students as Will McCue discovered!
The Year 12 Formal Committee are also putting the final touches on the preparation of the inaugural Year 12 Formal taking place on Friday, 14 June. It is expected to be the event of the Semester!

Our boarders have showcased their spectacular artistic flair this week. Embracing the dry season energy, the students created 3 stunning murals to represent each Boarding House. The area was filled with laughter, creativity, singing and teamwork as they raced against the clock to finish their murals in time. When the clock stuck 6.30, a well-deserved celebration was had. Paint brushes were swapped with pizza and footy as the students admired each other's artwork.
Some of our boarders will participate in various activities lined up for National Reconciliation Week. A concert is set for Monday, 3 June with many of the students rehearsing in the newly renovated Dewarra music room. There will be the Yulanga tournament running throughout the week with the Boarding and Middle School Students.
Beyond that, some of our students eagerly await the upcoming Stars Excursion and the Clontarf Camp later this month.
A bustling few weeks for us all in Boarding.

As part of National Careers Week, HRS launched the new Career Tools website.
The website is a dedicated careers resource where HRS students can explore fully interactive pages, encompassing everything they need to know about specific careers, job searches, and study options. The aim is to provide students with the latest information that will assist them to make decisions about their future career and life beyond school. Students can use the site to locate University, TAFE and a variety of other courses across Australia, source information about the VCE and search for job vacancies. The platform also includes links to a variety of other services and agencies that support students in terms of their post-school options.
Check out the website at Haileybury Rendall School (careertools.com.au)
Work Experience is a compulsory part of the Year 10 program. Students are encouraged to consider their interests and determine an industry or occupation that they would like to experience or know more about.
Students will be required to contact potential work host places/business to arrange their own work experience placement. Information and a work booklet with activities will be completed via PEX lessons in Term 2.

Bonnie Peacocke (Year 12) was approached by the Starlight Foundation to perform at this year’s Starlight Ball. Bonnie had this to say about her experience:
“When approached by the Starlight Foundation to perform at this year's Star Ball, I was honoured but also very nervous. I was so excited to perform for a cause such as the Starlight Foundation and to contribute to their mission of granting wishes to children who need it most. The experience was definitely a learning curve, and I am so grateful for the opportunity presented and the experience it gave me. It was so surreal to sing in front of a crowd of over 800 people in a setting like that and I thoroughly enjoyed it.’’

Senior School kicked off our lunchtime Inter-House competition. There was a great display of teamwork and enthusiasm, with every player bringing their A-game to the netball court. Competition was fierce throughout the week, with three houses winning two out of three games. To determine who would play in the final we went down the number of goals scored. The final match between Baru and Djarrak was tense from start to finish, with both teams showcasing grit and determination. However, it was Baru who emerged victorious with a final score of 9-5!
Great work to all involved in making the week a success. Thank you to the House Leaders, Ms. Staib, Mr. Douglas, Ms. Witte and Ms. Vo for organising the event.
Middle School Inter-House Netball competition proved to be an engaging and dynamic event, evolving from low-scoring games at the outset to a showcase of teamwork and skill by the end of the week. As teams collaborated and received guidance from their House leaders, the competition gained momentum, with students demonstrating enthusiasm and determination on the court.
Pumarali emerged as a standout team, showcasing strength and dominance throughout the tournament. Their impressive victory in the final against Djarrak, with a commanding score of 18-5, highlighted their cohesive teamwork. The match was undoubtedly exciting, with both teams giving their all and displaying admirable sportsmanship. These moments of spirited competition showcase a sense of community within the school and students' passion for sports.
On Monday, 13 May, Year 12 students led by Ellie Dancis challenged the HRS staff to a netball game. There was lots of positive competition before and during the game. The staff team consisted of a strong duo of Ms. Staib and Mr. Bowden who seemed unstoppable when it came to scoring goals.
The Year 12 team were fast around the court and made some great linking passes from defence to attack. It was great to see so many supporting on the sidelines. The staff were victorious coming away with a 12-7 win. Thank you to all teachers and students who participated!

Year 10 Lead the Way students have been preparing for their upcoming excursion. They have been designing and building improvised stretchers and learned that sometimes casualties need to be evacuated if they have injured themselves and are immobile. They also learned that if a stretcher is not available, you can always make one using materials found in the bush. This activity teaches essential survival and first aid skills, ensuring we are prepared to evacuate an injured person safely and efficiently in an emergency.

On Sunday 12 May, Haileybury Rendall School showcased their incredibly talented musicians and Visual Art students.
127 Music students took to the Banyan Stage at the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival to showcase 7 of our wonderful ensembles. The Electric Telephones opened the concert with “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. This was followed by our Junior School Choir “Fireflies” who presented a round called “Yonder Come Day” and David Guetta’s “Titanium”. We then moved into the presentation of our string ensembles; Animato Strings, Chamber Strings and the HRS String Quartet before hearing from the Middle and Senior School Choir “Contento”. We rounded out the performance with the Symphony Orchestra performing “High Hopes” and the theme from “The Never Ending Story”.
It was a fantastic display of many different genres and styles of music, and students should be extremely proud of the performance they gave. We look forward to presenting our fantastic Twilight Concert on Thursday, 20 June in Week 10.

Our Visual Art students exhibited their artwork, Sculpture by The Sea. The artworks were a collaborative effort by Mrs. Foster’s Ochre Art classes and developed from the student’s painting and ceramic tasks. The student's art was presented alongside other Darwin schools with the intention to celebrate art making and the theme of “Seabreeze” - aesthetics from Darwin’s coastal precinct of Nightcliff.

Haileybury Rendall School Stars were invited to attend the Gold Coast Suns AFL Clinic and Captains Run organised by AFLNT. Students participated in a few drills and were joined by Gold Coast Suns AFLW players Katie Lynch and Annabella Kievit. After the AFL Clinic, the girls met the Gold Coast Suns men’s players after their training session in preparation for their game against Geelong Cats for the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round held at TIO Stadium in Darwin.

2024 TERRITORY CUP!
The Katherine Clontarf Academy hosted the 2024 All Clontarf Territory Cup during Week 8 of Term 1 for all senior Clontarf Academy Members across the Top End. Clontarf Carnivals are a vital part of our program, as they provide strong incentives for our Academy members to excel in school. To participate in these carnivals, Academy members need to put in their best effort at school, make good choices, and embody the ‘Clontarf Spirit’ in all that they do.
The HRS Bloods played three preparatory games in Darwin against our Darwin-based Academies at Casuarina Senior College, Palmerston Senior College, and Taminmin College. Winning all three games, the Bloods headed to Katherine full of confidence, ready to face these teams for a second time as well as teams from West Arnhem and Katherine. Due to flooding along the Stuart Highway, teams from Tennant Creek and Alice Springs were unable to make the trip north.
It was a massive day of football with the first game starting at 8:30am and the last game finishing under lights at 7:00pm at Katherine Nitmiluk Oval. The HRS Bloods played excellent team football throughout the carnival, winning all four of their games for the day and finishing at the top. Playing in the Clontarf Spirit, the HRS Bloods comfortably overcame Palmerston Senior College and West Arnhem/Taminmin. Their game against Casuarina Senior College was thrilling, with Max Rogers (Year 12), Robin Wesley (Year 12), Sonny Smiler (Year 10), and Mazlan Patrick (Year 10) consistently winning the ball, controlling the game, and securing the win in a tough contest.
The closest game came against the home team, Katherine, and it was a nail-biter. Trailing for most of the game, the Bloods pushed harder for longer and ultimately emerged victorious. Jaren Sambo (Year 10) and Xavier Green (Year 11) took some big marks with Xavier playing well in the ruck all day. Max Rogers, Robin Wesley, Sonny Smiler, and Mazlan Patrick had another great game, while Tylar Raymond (Year 10) was the best forward, scoring spectacular goals from all over the ground only as Tylar can. Hank Huddlestone (Year 11) had a solid carnival on the wing, and full-back Rahiri Bedggood (Year 12) was a force in defence, reading the ball well and relieving pressure with long kicks down the line.
It was another great campaign for our senior Academy Members and a fantastic opportunity for the Bloods to showcase their football skills.
We look forward to more opportunities like this as we move into a busy Term 2 with more exciting camps, activities, and incentives planned.
