Our Early Learning Centre (ELC) children proudly took part in a rich week of activities to celebrate Reconciliation Week, demonstrating the importance of cultural understanding, connection, and community participation from an early age.
Throughout the week, our youngest learners were actively engaged in both ELC and whole-school events, highlighting the belief that reconciliation is for everyone—no matter their age. The children joined the whole-school Reconciliation Concert, where they experienced performances that celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, languages, and histories.
A special highlight was welcoming student leaders from Melbourne schools, who spent time connecting with our children and learning together through shared experiences. The ELC children also explored Google Earth, mapping out significant cultural landmarks and engaging in meaningful conversations about Country, place, and belonging.
Our creative side was brought to life through art workshops and the making of a ‘Web of Reconciliation’—a beautiful and symbolic display crafted with ropes in the colours of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Australian flags. This visual representation of unity and respect now hangs proudly in our space as a daily reminder of the journey we all share.
The children were also deeply engaged in hands-on cultural learning experiences, including a native animal workshop and a memorable Ochre painting session with Mr Dale from Dingo Cockatoo. These activities encouraged curiosity, respect, and a deeper understanding of the stories and traditions passed down through generations.
Participating in Reconciliation Week at this early stage in life lays the foundation for empathy, respect, and lifelong cultural awareness. Through play, creativity, and connection, our children are learning to value diversity, listen to different voices, and understand the importance of building a reconciled Australia.
We are proud of our ELC children and educators for embracing the spirit of Reconciliation Week and showing that every child can contribute to a kinder, more connected future.

As we come to the end of another busy and successful term, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our students, families, and staff for making it such a positive and enriching time in the Junior School.
This term has been filled with many memorable highlights. Our vibrant House Activities have been a consistent source of joy, helping to build friendships, strengthen connections, and spark a wonderful sense of school spirit. It has been a pleasure to see students engaging enthusiastically, supporting one another, and always striving to do their personal best.
Special congratulations go to the Year 5 and 6 students who represented us in the International Ethics Olympiad. These students worked hard throughout the term, preparing thoughtful and respectful arguments on a range of ethical dilemmas. They demonstrated excellent collaboration and maturity on the day and should be incredibly proud of their efforts.
Thank you also to our teachers for their hard work and dedication this term. The support and partnership between families and staff continues to be one of the great strengths of our school, and it plays a key role in helping every child to thrive.
Thank you once again for your ongoing support. I hope everyone enjoys a safe, restful, and fun-filled holiday break. May you all take the time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather with your loved ones.

Our Year 2 Magenta string students gave a thoughtful and joyful performance at the Junior School Assembly, marking their debut on stage.
In recognition of Reconciliation Week, they shared two contrasting pieces—On Top of Old Smokey and Carnival - using music as a powerful medium to convey messages of understanding, respect, and unity. Although a little nervous before their first assembly appearance, the students approached the performance with incredible positivity.
Their focus, teamwork, and growing confidence shone through. The final pose, bows held high in perfect unison, was a striking finish that captured the spirit of connection and celebration. Congratulations to all our young performers for their courage, commitment, and joy in sharing music.
What a special moment for our school community to witness!

During the last week of term, a group of young writers had the exciting opportunity to work with Mrs. Leonie Norrington, a published author known for her engaging stories rooted in Northern Territory life.
During the workshop, students explored storytelling techniques, character development, and how to draw inspiration from their own experiences. It was a memorable session that sparked creativity and inspired the next generation of storytellers.

It has been a busy few weeks for our Outdoor Education Team and Year 8 students, with camp taking place during Weeks 7, 8 & 9. A four-day experience, students left school with boots on and bags packed, ready to take on the Tabletop Track in Litchfield National Park’s western region.
The camp provides students with increased challenges from Year 7, with steeper gradients, tougher terrain, and a more remote experience. Despite the physical challenges the groups faced, students had the opportunity to share downtime with friends, enjoying the stunning waterholes and scenery of the Northern Territory.
A particular highlight from one group was the creation of an MTV Cribs-style activity where each tent group exhibited their tent site organisation and design, showcasing their creativity, collaboration, and flair.
As an integral component of the Middle School program, year-level camps are designed to foster student resilience, strengthen bonds with peers, and learn life skills in a beautiful outdoor setting within a supportive environment. Thank you to all staff who dedicated time away from their families to support the students on the Year 8 Camps.

Last Friday, we had a fun and engaging science presentation all about space and how plants can grow there!
First, we reviewed a PowerPoint presentation and watched three videos. The best one was about a 15-year-old girl who was training to go to Mars.
We learnt that it takes around 18 months to travel to Mars, and we talked about all the things you’d need to survive there, like food, water, air, and shelter. After that, we got into pairs and did a science experiment with spinach leaves. We even got to wear proper science lab coats!
At first, the spinach leaves floated in the water, but when we took the bubbles off, they sank. Then, we placed them under a bright LED light and observed how the leaves began to produce oxygen. It was awesome learning how plants can help people breathe, even in space!
In the end, we got to design our own plant to take to space. We had to consider what kind of food it would produce and how it could help us survive. Some of us created plants that clean the air, provide us with water, or improve our moods. One fun fact we learnt was that eating strawberries can make people feel happy!

Year 7-9
Recently, a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students had the opportunity to participate in the CDU Science Experience – a hands-on, immersive program designed to spark curiosity and broaden students' understanding of science and its real-world applications. The purpose of the program is to engage young minds in STEM through exciting, practical activities that showcase a range of scientific fields and career pathways.
Throughout the experience, students participated in interactive workshops covering areas such as microbiology, engineering, environmental science, and digital technologies. They worked in university labs, used specialist equipment, and collaborated with CDU staff and students, gaining valuable insights into university life and the many possibilities within science-related fields. Students also had the opportunity to work with Scientists from the Berrimah Farm scientific research precinct in the areas of agriculture, horticulture and biosecurity, with a particular focus on entomology, livestock health, crop protection and plant pathology.
The experience was not only educational but also inspiring, leaving students with a renewed excitement for science and a deeper appreciation of where their learning could take them.

Throughout Term 2, the Year 8 French classes have been learning about different styles of clothing and sharing their opinions and thoughts on fashion and looks. To celebrate their learning, the students put on a fabulous fashion show that combined their language skills with creativity and flair.
Each student strutted down the runway in their own unique style, ranging from cozy pyjamas and casual outfits to striking helmets and bold, distinctive looks. The mix of fashion choices brought both energy and humor to the show, with students confidently describing each outfit in French as their partners walked. Voilà un look très cool! Every outfit was full of personality and style. Teachers and classmates cheered them on, making it a standout moment of Term 2.
The fashion show was a fun way to practice speaking and listening in French, while also building confidence and presentation skills. Leading up to the event, our amazing teachers put in lots of preparation to make this lively event possible.
The event proved that learning a language can be as fashionable as it is fun, c’était magnifique!

As we reach the end of Term 2, it’s a pleasure to reflect on the many achievements and highlights that have taken place across our Senior School community.
Our Unit 3/4 students recently completed the General Achievement Test (GAT), a significant milestone in their VCE journey. Well done to all students for approaching this with focus and determination.
Academic excellence has also been on show, with many students recognised for their outstanding achievements at our recent Academic Awards assembly. Congratulations to all recipients – your hard work and commitment are to be commended.
Another major highlight was the Year 12 Formal. Held under the enchanting theme of a ‘Secret Garden’, students looked incredible and danced the night away, celebrating friendship and the final year of schooling in style.
A special mention must go to the Eco-Committee, led by our Sustainability Prefect, Charlotte (Year 12). In collaboration with Junior School students, the team has begun revegetation efforts at the pond located at the bottom of the school grounds. A working bee was held over the weekend with approximately 30 staff, parents and students volunteering their time. The clean-up was a huge success and marks the beginning of an exciting project to encourage native wildlife back into the area and work towards an environmental sustainability rating for our school.
Thank you to all staff, students, and families for your contributions this term. Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and well-deserved holiday break.

This term, our talented Year 10 Art students have turned their creative skills to an exciting new challenge — designing and constructing the cemetery scene stage sets for the school’s production of The Addams Family.
Inspired by the show’s dark humour and gothic style, students worked collaboratively to transform simple materials such as cardboard, tissue paper, tape, and paint into eerie gravestones and crypts that capture the quirky atmosphere of the Addams’ world.
Throughout the project, students applied their knowledge of stage design, learning about scale, proportion, and how to create a strong visual impact from the audience’s perspective. They experimented with texture techniques to give the tombstones a weathered, stone-like appearance and carefully considered grey colour choices to enhance the spooky mood.
The teamwork displayed by the class was outstanding, with students creating a set that not only provides the perfect backdrop for our performers but also showcases the creativity and dedication of our Year 10 artists.
Be sure to look out for their impressive work when you come to see The Addams Family on stage! Book your tickets here!

In an exciting competition that showcases the financial acumen of students across Australia, the ASX School Sharemarket Game offers participants $50,000 in virtual cash to invest in more than 300 companies listed on the ASX. This game simulates real sharemarket conditions, providing an invaluable learning experience about investing and portfolio management. This year, the competition saw strong representation from the Northern Territory, particularly from students at HRS. Among them, a standout performer was Sam, a Year 10 student, who emerged as the NT state winner.
His success in the game reflects the hard work and dedication he put into researching companies and making informed investment decisions. Sam not only achieved this prestigious title but also earned a cash prize of $500 along with several other rewards. Throughout the duration of the game, participants had to navigate market fluctuations, including the challenges posed by the Trump tariffs. Some students thrived, recording gains, while others were prompted to reassess and refine their strategies to adapt to the ever-changing market landscape. The ASX School Sharemarket Game culminates in celebrating the top three winning teams from across Australia and recognizing the highest-ranking team in each state and territory, all of whom go home with cash prizes. A huge congratulations to Sam for his impressive performance and success in this competitive environment!

We close out Term 2 by looking back at all the new and ongoing activities we have been offering at Boarding, and we always look forward to what else we can achieve. It is with great thanks to Caitlyn Morrissey from the main school, Elizabeth Roy, our administration support (and part-time activities support) and new staff member Tineale Browne, who are making a positive difference in supporting the activities space. In the last few weeks, there have been extra art programs, the fishing activity is underway, and additional after-school sports and pool access have all been achieved. Thanks to Natasha and Amelia, a fun tie-dye event was also created. Additionally, we brought in an ice cream truck on the recent Student-Free Day to provide the students (and staff) with a well-deserved treat.
We know that keeping our young people engaged and active makes a difference in their wellbeing, and I look forward to welcoming our new Activities Coordinator, Tahlia Bray, at the start of Term 3 to take over this important space for our Boarders. I hope all families, guardians, and Boarders have a safe and happy break. I thank my staff and boarders for making this term a great one.

A huge congratulations to Saanvi (Year 9), who proudly placed third in this year’s Pitch Perfect Competition!
Saavi’s journey has been truly inspiring — every time she faced a challenge, she met it with courage, humility, and a genuine passion to grow. Her achievement is not only a testament to her musical talent but also to the strength of character she has developed along the way. This experience has been about more than just singing; it’s been about resilience, self-belief, and discovering the confidence to shine from within.
A huge round of applause also goes to all of our incredible HRS candidates who participated in the competition: Elijza (Year 10), Elissa (Year 10), Maya (Year 12) and Sawana (Year 12). Your hard work, dedication, and heartfelt performances left a lasting impression — you lit up the stage and moved us all.
With that strength, each of you is capable of becoming anything you set your heart on — and that is the true magic of music. We are so proud of every one of you.
A special thanks and acknowledgement goes to Weike Li, our Head of Vocal Studies at HRS, and all the families who were there to support and cheer on our fantastic students.

The mission of the Parents and Friends Committee is to enhance the educational and social experiences of Haileybury Rendall School’s community of students, families, staff and friends of the school. This Committee is an avenue through which the parent voice is heard on a range of issues, and our committee has been actively supporting a number of events this year.
Let’s hear from some of our wonderful committee members:
Quiz Night and Auction
On 9 May, HRS hosted its 5th annual Quiz Night & Auction Fundraiser. The event brought together over 190 parents, teachers, staff, and friends of the School, who came together for an amazing garden-party themed night of engaging trivia and socialising, as well as some healthy competitive bidding on the wide range of auction items on offer. There were a lot of laughs, with Maria Cicchiello (Head of Operations), acting as our MC on the night, and one lucky guest should be expecting a knock on their door any day now from Mr. Brendan Evans (our Head of Middle School), after successfully bidding on his offering of lawn mowing and garden maintenance!
This year's event was a resounding success, raising over $22,000 to support the launch of a master-planned grounds beautification.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of the Darwin business community, as well as the support we receive from our HRS families, and so we would like to extend a huge thank you to all those who donated. We look forward to another amazing Quiz Night in 2026!
Kim (Year 7 and 10 parent)
Hi, I'm Jonathan. I helped out at the Quiz night, assisting people with check-in and tallying up the scores. It was an excellent opportunity to get involved and meet the wider Haileybury Rendall School Community! The garden party theme featured a wide array of costumes, and a great range of donated auction items was available.

Mother’s Day Breakfast
Hi, I'm Mick, a Year 3 parent.
Nisita (parent of a preschooler and Year 3 student) and I helped with flipping some pancakes at the Mother's Day breakfast at the Junior School. We had two barbeques running hot to keep up with the constant flow of parents and students.
It was a delicious and delightful way to celebrate our mothers at the start of the busy day.
We are looking forward to more fantastic involvement throughout Semester 2.

This term, the Star’s team has been keeping active with a range of fitness-focused activities designed to get students moving and engaged. Middle School students took part in afternoon tennis sessions in partnership with the team from Tennis NT. During the program, the girls learned fundamental tennis skills, enjoyed a variety of games, and even put their new techniques to the test in friendly challenges.
A big thank you goes to Grace and the Tennis NT team for their ongoing support and encouragement as our students developed confidence and skills on the court. Middle School students also recently took part in the Dolphin’s Cup, a fantastic event organised by the dedicated team at NRL NT. The girls had the opportunity to play touch rugby against other schools, meet some of the Dolphins players, and wrap up the day with a well-deserved swim.
Meanwhile, senior students embraced the challenge of gym workouts, attending sessions at both Fernwood and Try Fitness gyms. Led by dedicated personal trainers, the sessions pushed the girls to perform at their best, building strength, resilience, and teamwork. It was fantastic to see the girls’ energy and determination in these sessions! These activities reflect the program’s ongoing commitment to promoting health, confidence, and empowerment through physical activity.

Collaborative Efforts in Drama Curriculum Development
On May 26, the Drama departments from Haileybury Melbourne and Darwin Campuses came together to discuss and share insights on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective side of the curriculum. This collaboration provided valuable insights that will assist in the further development of our Drama curriculum at HRS.
A big thank you to all Drama teachers for your participation and dedication to enhancing our educational programs.
Together, we are making strides in creating a more inclusive and culturally rich learning environment while paving the way for understanding and reconciliation.
