As we move through the middle of the term, there has been a clear and intentional focus across the Middle School on the values of integrity and courage. These are words we speak about often, but in recent weeks we have been encouraging students to think more deeply about what they look like in practice – particularly in the quieter moments. Integrity is not only demonstrated in the big, visible decisions, but in the small choices made when no one is watching. Courage, too, is not always loud; it can be found in doing the right thing, standing by a peer, or taking responsibility when it would be easier not to. It has been encouraging to see students engaging thoughtfully with these ideas and beginning to recognise their own capacity to lead through everyday actions.
A particular highlight of the past fortnight was our International Women’s Day Breakfast and Assembly. These events offered a powerful opportunity to celebrate the women in our community and to reflect on the influence, strength, and care that shape the lives of our young people. The breakfast, in particular, was a moving experience. To witness mothers and daughters sitting side by side – some at the very beginning of their secondary school journey, others nearing its end – was a quiet reminder of how these relationships evolve over time. There was something profoundly special in observing those shared moments: the pride, the laughter, and the deep sense of connection. The assembly that followed, with student-created videos, thoughtful staff reflections, and a panel featuring our STARS students, reinforced the importance of voice, story and representation. It was a celebration, but also a call to continue building a community where all feel seen and valued.
Despite some extraordinarily wet weather, the energy of our students has not waned. AFL 9s has run with great enthusiasm throughout the term, culminating in a well-earned victory for Nganabaru House. Beyond the competition itself, it has been wonderful to see students embracing the opportunity to connect, to show team spirit and to find joy in participation – even when conditions have been less than ideal.
In Week 8, we celebrated Harmony Week, a time to recognise and honour the cultural diversity within our community. Our students contributed in meaningful and joyful ways, from the vibrant Irish dance performance to a moving assembly moment in which our Sanshui students delivered an Acknowledgement of Country in Mandarin. The Free Dress Day added another layer of colour and pride, with many students choosing to wear cultural dress or a touch of orange. It was genuinely uplifting to see students express and share their identities so openly, and to witness the respect and curiosity shown by their peers.
Taken together, these moments speak to the kind of community we are continuing to build – one grounded in respect, shaped by connection, and strengthened by the everyday choices of our students. Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support and partnership.
