Junior School Program
Transition to Year 6
Shaping new attitudes to learning
Haileybury Rendall School’s junior students enjoy the best of everything from the outset—the best teachers, resources, facilities and curriculum.
Our Education Program stimulates children to reach their potential. Boys and girls learn how to care, listen, take turns and concentrate. They are encouraged to make decisions, become self-sufficient, answer questions, solve problems and work independently.
Literacy and Numeracy—the foundation stones of all learning at Haileybury Rendall School—mark the beginning of a complete education from Transition through the junior years. They are delivered through the Explicit Instruction method and our results show that Haileybury students develop faster than their peers. Student progress is carefully and objectively monitored.
Explicit Instruction Model
Haileybury Rendall School uses the explicit instruction approach. This research-based methodology produces exceptional student results. The two components include The Warm Up and ‘I Do, We Do and You Do’. The Warm Up is a 10 to 15-minute prime learning strategy at the beginning of a Reading, Spelling, Writing and Mathematics lesson.
The aim is to move student learning from short-term to long-term memory, so students effectively retain what they are being taught.
The post-Warm Up lesson includes ‘I Do’ sections where the teacher clearly explains, step by step, the concept to be covered. ‘We Do’ sees the teacher check for individual student understanding before he/she completes his/her work.
Finally, ‘You Do’ sees students given work at their ability level. All teachers in the junior years receive ongoing professional development in this approach.
